Thrill Seekers (feat. Hannah Doucet)
36 Claremont Project Space

March 29th  - April 28th, 2025

Roller coasters, waterslides, ferris wheels, and the like: Stemming from research into the immersive, transportive qualities of theme parks, Thrill Seekers (feat. Hannah Doucet) reimagines these destinations as a precarious settings for self discovery. Balancing nostalgic reverence with an awareness of its extractive and wasteful qualities, Ocampo incorporates smart phone images taken at theme parks into existing painting processes. Here, seeing thrills acts as a stand in for searching for love, friendship, one’s self, other people, and emancipaton under the backdrop of  absurd capitalist spectacle.

This exhibition features a site-specific contribution by Toronto-based artist Hannah Doucet. Exploring wish fulfilment, the fallacy of fantasy, and personal experiences in being granted a wish trip to Disneyworld as a child after battling Lymphoma, Doucet work intervienes in a chimeric mural, with her centerpiece image and floppy wand scculptures acting as both fellow passengers and beating heart.

Through collaboration, the scope of this foray into theme parks sprawls out into it’s own kind of worldbuilding, wherein Ocampo and Doucet are able to introspect in the company of a kindred spirit. Rides are always meant to be enjoyed with others, right?
